Preoperative Instructions for IV Sedation

FOOD & DRINK

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery appointment if you are having IV sedation. (NO breakfast, snacks, coffee, water or food of any kind the morning of the appointment.) Take all prescribed medications with a sip of water!

SMOKING

No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.

TRANSPORTATION

It is required that a responsible family member or friend drive you to your appointment and then drive you home when your surgery is complete. This person must report with you to the office when you check in for the surgery AND stay at the office through the duration of the surgery.  The surgery will last approximately one to two hours.   We are unable to treat you if you do not bring a responsible adult.

MINORS

Any person under the age of 18, who is not an emancipated minor, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must sign a treatment consent form.

CLOTHING & VALUABLES

Wear comfortable, loose clothing and low heel shoes.  Leave all jewelry and valuables at home.

MAKE UP & CONTACTS

Eye makeup, lipstick, nail polish and other cosmetics should not be worn.  Contacts should be removed.

MUSIC

If you have an iPod or portable music player, bring it to your surgery.

PRESCRIPTION INSTRUCTIONS

If prescribed these medications, please do the following:

  • VALIUM: Take one tablet one hour before bed the night before surgery AND one tablet one hour before your surgical procedure.
  • ANTIBIOTICS: Take two tablets one hour prior to your surgical procedure. Continue taking your antibiotics post-operatively as directed.
  • PERIDEX: Start peridex oral rinse three days prior to your surgical procedure.  Rinse twice daily and use as directed.

If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or upset bowels, please notify the office.

If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Ragonese prior to your surgical date for instructions.
